Improvement Notice
An improvement notice requires you to take specific action to comply with the Fire Safety Order within a stated timeframe. Timescales vary but are typically 28 days or more. You can appeal to a tribunal, but the notice remains in force during the appeal unless suspended by the tribunal.
Prohibition Notice
A prohibition notice can restrict or prohibit the use of all or part of your premises immediately if the inspector believes there is a risk to life from fire. This can mean your business premises are closed until compliance is demonstrated. This is the most serious form of enforcement action.
Prosecution
Failure to comply with an improvement or prohibition notice is a criminal offence under the Fire Safety Order. Penalties include unlimited fines and up to two years imprisonment. Do not ignore enforcement notices.
